Dear friends, not sure anyone reads this, but I am mostly on Facebook these days - as all my friends/family/colleagues are on there and not on here or MySpace (I just use MySpace for games).

Spammers don't take long to catch onto trends - apparently I can protect myself against swine flu by getting a bigger penis.

In other news I have registered as self-employed as I start to work on starting up my home based business (as my illness gets worse and I have to reduce the hours in my main office job). The first couple of years will be tough, interesting, and probably won't make me that much money - but I can but try!

A small warning, this isn't the modern meaning of the word liberal, but the original meaning (sometimes called 'classic liberal')

Subject:New computer
Time:11:49 pm
See my previous entry - my new computer has been in for a couple of weeks now. Long story short, it is wonderful (compared to my last one anyway!) Firefox is still a memory and CPU hog (especially on media heavy websites) but now it doesn't matter as I have 4 times as much memory, there are two cores in the CPU and they are faster than my old single core anyway.

In other news I am having a bad flare up of my illness, and I have a rotten cold as well.

Subject:New computer ordered!
Time:09:11 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] hopeful
My current computer has been struggling for a long while now, and things are just getting worse. The DVD/CD drive hasn't worked in over a year, and the thing struggles to run Firefox these days! Mind you FF is a bit of a resource hog and I do have a bunch of Add-ons installed but even so. I have been resisting a new computer because to be honest I/we are a bit broke at the moment but things got too much - and also in the back of my mind is that with the pound tanking imports (e.g. electronics) will get more expensive soon when the current distributors supplies of components runs out.

So I compromised between a nice system that would be reasonably future proof and a bargain basement computer (the one I had was a bargain basement special when my previous computer died suddenly - and I regret that now). Cyberpower (which I have heard good things of) had this:

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/mega_sales_III/detail

A couple of upgrades, e.g. more memory and XP rather than Vista (all the other suppliers I was considering insisted I had Vista!) and that will do for now I think. I will use my old monitor for now too as that isn't too bad (19" TFT).

I hope Cyberpower are a good place to go - they are a gaming rig shop and I am sure they have been recommended to me in the past. I have so much bad luck with computers, the last one I ordered off the net was a nightmare - hope I don't get stuck with a lemon again.

I might be able to run Tomb Raider again, I miss my games.

OK - this journal, my LJ, was meant to be a light hearted friendly sort of thing where I posted the results of silly online (what SciFi character are you?) type surveys, and news from what I have been up to. It didn't get many entries because for various reasons I struggle in my life (health related) so I didn't want to post a stream of downer type entries.

I also don't want to post a load of political stuff because that might alienate the few people (who I count as friends) that read this - and I tend to get ranty given half the chance. So I have started a political type blog on blogspot (i.e. blogger) and will stick to light hearted stuff here.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

"An accomplished diplomat who can virtually do no wrong, you sometimes know it is best to rely on the council of others while holding the reins."

There are some words which I have known since I was a schoolboy. "With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." These words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie -- as a wisdom, and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged.

Subject:Digsby
Time:11:33 pm

I just got Digsby - an all-in-one IM client, that checks Gmail and MySpace and all sorts of other stuff. It is also not a resource hog (unlike AIM 6) and is small and fast.

This post is really just to test the widget above, it's an embedded swf thingy that lets you see if I am online and chat to me through the widget (anonymously) without going through an IM client :-)

I will probably get a load of spam now!

EDITED Feb 2009 to say: I have swapped to Pidgin so Digsby won't work for that thing in this post!

Last weekend BST (British Summer Time) started - the clocks went forward. This is usually regarded as the start of Spring. You can tell - the 3" of snow predicted for Southern England is here this morning. Very pretty but might be a bit slippery and slow going into work tomorrow!

What military aircraft are you?

F-15 Eagle

You are an F-15. Your record in combat is spotless; you've never been defeated. You possess good looks, but are not flashy about it. You prefer to let your reputation do the talking. You are fast, agile, and loud, but reaching the end of your stardom.

Subject:Good news and bad news
Time:06:38 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] Tired but happy
Good news one: My recent bad prolonged flare up of my illness is slowly getting a bit better. Hopefully unless I get worse again I shouldn't be too bad (for me) after the Christmas break.

Good news two: I have a new (to me) car. My old one finally had too many things go wrong with it so I splashed out (on credit natch) on a 1997 Ford Fiesta 1.3 Ghia. Much nicer than the old one, electric thingies and other thingies that work. Fairly low mileage. I really hope it lasts a few years because:

Bad news: I have to pay for the above over the next year. Money was tight before hand but wow, it is going to be a bit tough. I have done the sums and we are OK, but no room for manoeuvre. All this is not helped by my car insurance, the house insurance, my wife's car MOT and service, our breakdown recovery, my professional society fees, and a bunch of other stuff all coming due in late November/early December. This means the first few months of next year will be interesting as I pay all this off.

The trouble is I need the car, because there is no public transport to speak of to get me to work. Even if there was it would only take me to the front gate and I am not well enough to walk to my building from there. And even if I was, it would still cost more than running a car. And it is too far to cycle even if I were able to cycle.

Christmas soon. Referred to by me as the 'feast of the unconquered sun' paying homage to its original roots, or more usually 'cheese week'. All good stuff!

I have hardly been writing in here lately at all - but really there isn't much to write about as ill health has meant my life is pretty much the same day to day at the moment, just getting by. But I do read my friends' entries to keep up with you all!

I have been fairly bad recently and working at home most of the time - though I am going to try to get into the office for a couple of days this week and hopefully build back up to going in more as I am slightly better lately.

A joyrider lost it on the roundabout our house is on on Saturday. Managed to try and land it in our front garden. We lost a bit of wall but the honking great knarly old privet hedge we have behind the wall stopped further ingress. The kids (it was kids of course) took out a lamppost and sadly destroyed next doors front garden wall, gateposts and gate. Not sure if the police will do too much, they never seem that bothered by robberies, vehicle theft and joyriding and so on.

Subject:Floods
Time:08:08 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/6908983.stm

It took me two hours to drive home, when the most it has taken before is about 45 minutes (bad traffic). My little F reg 950cc Pug managed to soldier on through the floods - passing *lots* of other cars broken down. When I got home and opened the door there was mud and leaves stuck in the crack where the door meets the bodywork - glad it didn't leak!

Basically I kept having to try different routes to get home, and finally managed to find one that wasn't blocked by deep water and/or stuck lorries. My usual route passes under a railway bridge and the water was five foot deep at that point.

Glad it is the weekend and there are a couple of days for it to go down a bit before I have to go back to work!

I'm a poker card shark.

You are on top of the poker food chain, cool headed and focused. One would be wise to leave the table the moment you sit down. You’re practically a chip-magnet and anyone that thinks otherwise should prepare to file for bankruptcy.
I want to take this quiz too...
